State of the News Media

I have found an online report by Amy Mitchell on “State of the News Media”. I came across this journalist whilst doing my essential readings for today’s lecture. Her name was mentioned in a book called “Citizen witnessing: revisioning journalism in times of crisis” which was written by Stuart Allan 2013. Stuart Allen mentioned her statement about social media tools when he wrote “Social media tools and mobile connectivity provides citizens with a deeper and more direct relationship with the news”. I found that information useful therefore I made a research on the reports written by Amy Mitchell and “State of the News Media” was one of them. I believe that this online report will be useful for students in this module, because it consists of information about how news are spread through the use of social media in the U.S., also she talks about the use of mobile devices to retrieve online news and she gives recent examples and statistics regarding the state of the news media. Lastly, Amy Mitchell is a director of journalism research at Pew Research Center and she is “an expert in research design, methods evaluation, analysis and writing. She specializes in how technology is changing the flow of news information today.”(Pew Research Center, 2015), therefore I think that the information that she provides in the report is trustworthy and useful.

  1. I think it was a good place to start by going beyond our required readings. Thank you for linking your post to some of her statistical analyses – I agree with you that it would be a good resource for the module. But because this is very American-based, I think if we had a parallel analysis for UK-USA juxtaposition, it would be much more helpful, considering that most of our course material is very British oriented. So that would be something I’d look into!
